Loliem Comunidade convened a meeting, after receiving a request letter from the Director of Technical Education (DTE) to allott 300 acres of land to set-up permanent campus for IIT-G.
DTE, stating that it had earmarked land on Bhagwati plateau in Loliem village, had asked NOC from Loliem Comunidade to take over 300 acres of land.
Over 50 components of Loliem Comunidade along with attorney Darshan Prabhugaonkar, president Mahesh Warik and treasurer Dattaprasad Prabhudesai discussed the DTE letter and agreed to give the requested land.
The components felt that the terms and conditions can be discussed later, but to enable the government to pursue the matter with the Central government, decided to convey their decision.
“IIT-G is a prestigious and prime technical institute of the country and also non-polluting project. We cannot miss the bus by delaying our decision. Other things can follow later,” stated Darshan while speaking on some reservations expressed by the residents.
Former minister Isidore Fernandes and some residents said the IIT Goa should not burden the villagers and the village infrastructure like water, road, electricity and garbage.
Loliem Panchayat already expressed its desire to welcome IIT in the village, with Sarpanch Darshan Prabhugaonkar taking the lead by assisting a government team looking out for suitable land.
