With authorities allegedly ignoring the incomplete Smart City works amid risks as the monsoon approaches, Congress legislator Carlos Ferreira has raised concerns that this could lead to vector-borne diseases in Panaji.
“I am not trying to instill fear among the people, but with the delays in the Smart City works in Panaji, there could be outbreaks of malaria and dengue. People should be cautious, and health authorities should be on standby,” said the Aldona MLA.
He also alleged “underground corruption” and criticized Imagine Panaji Smart City Development Limited and other concerned agencies for repeatedly digging up roads that have already been worked on under the same project. “The beauty and charm of Panaji are being lost due to these unending works. Panaji is being given step-motherly treatment,” he added.
The IPSCDL has so far failed to give clarity on the completion of works even though its earlier deadline was May 31. Most parts of Panaji continue to be excavated and closed while other patches covered with mud are being washed away in the ongoing pre-monsoon rains.
Earlier, Ferreira met Inspector General of Police Omvir Singh, appealing for action against rampant daylight thefts and robberies.
He stated that suspicious persons have been moving around and targeting homes even where the occupants are present.
