The Oxel panchayat has issued a show-cause notice to the developer of a controversial multi-dwelling project near the heritage spring, questioning why the construction license should not be revoked.
Sarpanch Reshal Arporkar signed the notice, which requires the developer to respond within seven days.
“The builder violated a clause of the construction license requiring a six-metre access road. Consequently, the panchayat body unanimously resolved to issue a show-cause notice to the builder, questioning why his NOC should not be revoked,” Arporkar explained.
The decision to issue the notice came during a panchayat meeting held on Monday, following significant protests from villagers against the construction project.
The villagers, supported by environmental activists, argued that the project is detrimental to the environment and the village’s ecology.
In response to these concerns, the panchayat decided to take action against the developer.
In addition to the show cause notice, the panchayat has sought assistance from various government departments, including the Public Works Department (PWD), Town and Country Planning (TCP), Water Resources Department (WRD), and the Health Department.
The panchayat has requested these departments to inspect the multi-dwelling project and prepare detailed reports so that it can take further action in the matter.
The project has faced substantial opposition from the local community and environmental groups, particularly the Goa Green Brigade.
The activists and villagers have been vocal about their concerns regarding the project’s proximity to the heritage spring, which they believe could have adverse effects on the local environment and ecology.
To amplify their protest, the locals recently organised a candlelight vigil and submitted a representation to the panchayat, demanding an immediate stop work order for the project.
The community’s sustained efforts reflect their determination to protect the heritage spring and preserve the ecological balance of the area.
As the developer prepares to respond to the show cause notice, the Oxel panchayat and concerned villagers await the next steps in this contentious issue.
The outcome of this dispute will likely set a precedent for future development projects in the region, emphasising the importance of environmental preservation and community involvement in local governance.
