Congress party volunteers led by the Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) President Amit Patkar observed World Environment Day on Sunday by planting over 100 saplings at Mollem.
Patkar appealed to people to grow trees and to refrain from chopping them down when they reach maturity.
Others present included Mormugao MLA Sankalp Amonkar, South Goa District President Savio D’Silva, South Goa District General Secretary Shyam Bhandari, Sanvordem Block Youth President Sanket Bandari, Captain Viriato, Moreno Rebello and Krishna Zore.
On the occasion, a local youth Krishna Zore, an IIT alumni and employed in an MNC to develop software for some of the topmost research organisations in the world, was felicitated for first raising his voice against the cutting of thousands of trees for the power transmission lines.
Responding to his felicitation, Zore remembered the late John Aguiar for his great contribution to the struggle and thanked him for his guidance and support.
Later, Patkar and his team also called on Zore’s parents at his residence and felicitated them.
