In a tragic incident, a 4-year-old boy died after accidentally pulling the trigger of a gun assigned to his father, a police head constable, in their house at Bicholim late Thursday night.
According to police sources, the incident took place at about 11 pm, when the head constable, who is currently on security duty for Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu’s visit in the State, had arrived home at about 10.30 pm and left his gun on a table, before proceeding to the bathroom.
Around that time, his 4-year-old son came to the room and started playing with the pistol while his mother was at work in the kitchen.
The boy is reported to have accidentally pulled the trigger and shot himself in the right eye. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, but was declared dead on arrival. The body was sent for an autopsy to the GMC hospital and later handed over to the family.
The incident has stunned people in Bicholim taluka, with many wondering how a 4-yr-old boy had managed to pull the trigger of the gun.
According to police sources, police personnel from the rank of Police Sub-Inspectors (PSIs) and above are entitled to have a gun. Those below the rank of PSIs are issued firearms for specific purposes like bandobust and security duty.
