Even as the construction of the Corlim-Banastarim bundh has been taken up on war footing to stop entry of saline water in the fields of Corlim and other areas, a local has expressed concern over salinity slowly affecting the well water due to continuous neglect of the issue by authorities concerned over the years.
Speaking to reporters after visiting the site of the bundh construction, Mariano Ferrao informed that the entry of saline water in the Corlim fields since the past several years has resulted in salinity slowly affecting well water in his property.
“Since the past few months, I have noticed that there is a considerable change in the taste of the well water which I suspect could be due to seepage of salinity in the groundwater,” Ferrao informed and demanded that the entry of saline water inland should be immediately stopped.
However, Corlim communidade attorney and panch Baptist Pereira informed that the work on the construction of the bundh from Corlim to Banastarim has been taken up on war footing to ensure that saline water does not enter inland.
“The construction is taken up at a cost of Rs 6.8 crore and once it is completed, not a single drop of saline water should enter the fields. However, it will take some time for the saline water to completely recede from the fields as it has stagnated in pools at many places,” Pereira pointed out.
He said if the issue is not resolved over a period of time, then the committee of the tenants association should be held responsible.
