Councillor corners Mapusa chairperson over futsal ground

MAPUSA

The Mapusa Municipal Council’s earlier decision to construct a futsal ground evoked a lot of fireworks in the council meeting on Thursday with councillor, Prakash Bhivshet stating that futsal ground can never come at the proposed site as the title of the land was not clear.
“The chairperson brought the issue of futsal ground illegally. You are deliberately putting the council in trouble,” Bhivshet lashed out at the chairperson.
Last month, in a special council meeting, the council had passed a resolution to construct a futsal ground near St Xavier’s College at Dattawadi, Mapusa.
Bhivshet had strongly opposed the move of constructing the futsal ground at the proposed site as the land was a disputed area and the matter was in court.
On Thursday, when the matter of confirmation of the last special council meeting was taken up, it was mentioned in the minutes that councillor Prakash Bhivshet had abstained from the decision on the futsal ground.
Taking objection to the wording of the minutes, Bhivshet said, “I had not abstained but opposed the resolution.”
Seconding Bhivshet, councillor Tarak Arolkar said that the land proposed to construct the futsal ground was indeed not in possession of the municipality.
He said the land belonged to the Comunidade and years back the council had resolved to construct a Yatri Niwas at the site.
He also said all plans were drawn and consultants were also appointed for the project but the Yatri Niwas could not be constructed because of the disputed land.
Arolkar further disclosed that a tenant also staked a claim on part of the land.
Chairperson, Shubhangi Vaigankar found herself completely cornered on the issue.
