The High Court of Bombay at Goa on Wednesday issued notice to Meta Platforms India Pvt Ltd on a petition filed by Goa-based social media influencer Harshad Hiru Naik seeking protection of videos and other digital content stored on his blocked Instagram account.
Naik approached the court contending that Meta’s internal system provides for the complete erasure of digital assets and accounts if a blocked profile remains inactive for more than 180 days. He raised fears that the data could be permanently erased under the platform's account deletion policy as his account is nearing that deadline, which expires in September.
The petitioner also submitted that over the past six years he has built an extensive repository of videos and other digital content on the account. He argued that unless the account is restored or his case is reviewed before the expiry of the 180 days, the entire archive of content faces the risk of permanent deletion.
Taking note of the urgency arising from the potential loss of the digital data, the High Court issued notices to all respondents, including Meta India Pvt. Ltd. The matter has been posted for further hearing on July 22.
