Cuncolim locals say no to highway through town

Press for bypass via Sarzora-Balli running parallel to KR track

MARGAO
Residents of Cuncolim on Monday have opposed the alignment of the NH-17 passing through the town, demanding that the government stick to the bypass via Sarzora-Balli running parallel to the Konkan Railway line as mentioned in the Regional Plan.
The residents assembled at Panzorconne where they presented a memorandum to local MLA Clafacio Dias demanding that the government stick to the original highway alignment and scrap the bypass proposed after the Uskini bandh.
Cuncolim Municipal Council Councillor Mario Moraes told the residents that the Council has already objected to the NH-17 bypass passing through the town at the Uskini bandh. He said the government had in the past settled for the bypass starting from Sarzora running parallel to the KR tracks, before joining the National highway at the primary health centre at Balli.
Congress leader Altinho Gomes urged the Cuncolim MLA to use his good offices to see that heavy trucks don't ply on the internal road at
Panzroconne.
In his address, the MLA said he would take up the matter with the PWD Minister Sudin Dhavalikar as well as the Principal Chief Engineer to ascertain the NH-17 alignment finalized by the
government.
He assured the people that he would stand by them and would even take to the streets in the movement to demand realignment of the NH-17 as per the Regional plan.
Residents pointed out that although the government has till date not unveiled the NH-17 alignment plan before the public, they suspect a hidden agenda to take the highway through the thickly populated areas to save the cost of construction.
Meanwhile, the residents of Cuncolim have received support from their counterparts in Dandeavaddo-Chinchinim, who have also been demanding a NH-17 bypass taking into account the future traffic movement on the highway.
In the meantime, a delegation of residents of Cuncolim have decided to call on the TCP Minister Vijai Sardesai with a plea to persuade the government to go in for a bypass along Sarzora-Balli
route running parallel to the KR line.
