Angela Luis Painginkar is the new Chairperson of the Cuncolim Municipal Council.
Even as outgoing Chairperson Lavita Mascarenhas alleged that money has played a role in the formation of the new council, Angela has rubbished the allegations, asserting that no money was taken by any councillor to form the new council.
In the election held on Friday, Angela defeated outgoing Chairperson Lavita Mascarenhas by 8-2 votes to take over the reigns of office. Backed by the eight-member group, which was instrumental in voting out Lavita from office earlier this month, Angela thanked the eight councillors for their support.
After her election, Angela said she would take the support and help of local Cuncolim MLA Clafacio Dias as well as the state government to usher in development of the town.
“The eight-member group does not belong to any political party. We have all come together under the Cuncolim citizens panel. We will take the help of the local MLA as
well as the state government to take up development works in the municipal area,”
she said.
Replying to a question, Angela said the municipality has funds at its disposal and the same would be spent to take up developmental works, adding that pre-monsoon works have commenced in some of the wards.
Meanwhile, outgoing Chairperson Lavita told the media after the election that certain councillors had taken money from her to make her the Chairperson, but hastened to add that they have dislodged her even before she could complete one year in office. “Some of these councillors were paid Rs one lakh each to elect me,” she alleged.
