No wells surrounding Sonsodo contaminated: Margao CO

MARGAO: The Margao Municipal Council on Friday claimed that none of the wells cleaned so far around a kilometer radius from the Sonsodo waste dump was found contaminated.

The civic body went on to further say that not a single well was found enveloped with foul odour during the clean-up operation.

Cleaning up the wells within a kilometer radius from the Sonsodo dump yard upon instructions from Deputy Chief Minister Vijai Sardesai, the Margao civic body has so far cleaned up around 16 wells and around the dump yard.

Chairperson Babita Prabhudesai, Chief Officer Sidhivinayak Naik, municipal engineer Manoj Arsekar and other officials on Friday inspected the ongoing well clean-up work around the Sonsodo dump yard. A statement later issued by the Chief Officer later stated that of the 16 wells cleaned up so far, not a one single well was found contaminated. “During inspection, we did not come across any complaint of contamination of the well water. Moreover, not a single well was even found emanating foul smell,” the Chief Officer said. The well clean-up operation around the Sonsodo dump yard was ordered by the Deputy Chief Minister Vijai Sardesai during his visit to Sonsodo earlier this month as part of the short-term measures recommended at the dump yard before the onset of monsoons.

Covering of the Sonsodo dump yard will be taken up by the Solid Waste Management Corporation. The Corporation has decided to cover the waste dump with geo membrane to prevent the leachate from the dump flowing into the adjoining water bodies. In fact, the Margao civic body has cleaned up the leachate tank and the same will be again emptied before

the monsoons.
