The Feast of Our Lady of Sacred Heart of Jesus Chapel at Curdi-Sanguem will be celebrated after a gap of four years on May 28 at 10.30 am.
The celebration of the feast this year will be a grand affair as Bishop of Baroda Sebastiao (Seby) Mascarenhas will be the main celebrant at the Feast Mass.
Bishop Seby Mascarenhas is a well-known figure in the remote Curdi village in Sanguem as he had worked with Curdi parishioners for some time during his formation stages before being ordained a priest.
The celebration of the Feast of Sacred Heart of Jesus Chapel at Curdi-Sanguem depends on the water level in the backwaters of the Selaulim Dam and it is celebrated in the last week of May if the water recedes completely near the Chapel area, which otherwise remains submerged for most parts of the year.
While in 2019 and 2020, the feast could not be celebrated due to the Covid pandemic, the area around the Chapel remained underwater in 2021 and 2022 and no celebrations could take place.
This year, the people are upbeat not only because they are getting to celebrate the feast after a gap of four years, but more so because Bishop Seby Mascarenhas has acceded to their request of being the main celebrant at the Feast Mass.
It is also pertinent to note here that along with the Chapel, the Someshwar Temple devoted to Lord Shiva also resurfaces during the month of April-May. During this time, the Hindus flock to the ancient Curdi village to celebrate the annual Zatrotsav.
