Cutbona fishermen set aside differences, form federation in interest of community

MARGAO
Sunday saw the boat owners and fishermen operating from the Cutbona fishing jetty forming a federation under the banner of Cutbona Boat Owners Federation.

The Federation has been formed by the boat owners by leaving behind their past differences in the interest of the fishing community.

Representatives of the three fisheries societies and the two boat owners unions operating from the Cutbona fishing jetty participated at a meeting held at the Union office on Sunday. This is the first time in the last three years that members from all the three fisheries societies and the two unions have come together to form a Federation.

After the meeting, former Cutbona Boat Owners Union president Patrick D’Silva told the media that the boat owners have buried their past differences and have now formed a federation under the banner of the Cutbona Boat Owners Federation. “We have taken the decision to form the Federation in the interest of the boat owners. The Federation will take up the issues and grievances plaguing the Cutbona fishing jetty and the boat owners with the authorities,” he said.

Another former Cutbona Boat Owners Union president Savio D’Silva said the boat owners have left behind their differences and come together in the interest of the fishing community. “We have been facing a host of issues at the Cutbona jetty. The small boat owners have been facing difficulty in anchoring boats at the jetty. The road is in bad shape,” he said.

He pointed out that other issues, including the hostile navigation issue at the mouth of river Sal will be taken up with the government by the Cutbona Boat Owners Federation.
