Dalits highlight various issues
PERNEM: Panchayat Minister Rajendra Arlekar has assured the Dr Ambedkar Janaseva Samiti (DAJS) to replace the Ambedkar statue at Pernem with a new one and also look into land acquisition for Ambedkar Bhavan at Porvorim.
He was speaking at the meeting organised by the Samiti at Virnoda Panchayat hall.
Dadu Mandrekar, Sakharam Korgaokar, Milind Mate, Satish Korgaokar, Harischandra Jadhav, Tukaram Tamboskar, Umesh Hanspurkar and Hari Korgaokar while highlighting the problem faced by Dalits brought to Arlekar's notice that there is no reservation for Dalits in education institutes.
Arlekar also assured to look into the demand of people of renaming Surbanwada as Dr Babasasheb Ambedkar Wada. “Ambedkar is not only a Dalits' leader, but the leader of all Indians. There is a proposal to start a lecture series in Goa,” Arlekar said.
Arlekar also advocated on public crematorium in all the villages in Goa. “There is a bad trend to have separate crematoriums for Dalits and other communities. In modern society, it should be changed,” he said.
Councillor of Pernem Municipal Council Siddesh Pernekar was felicitated by Arlekar on the occasion.
