Firmly ruling out the question of issuing numbers to the 166 illegal houses in the village, Davorlim sarpanch Herculano Niasso on Wednesday asserted that the houses which have come up in the village are all located in the green paddy zone.
“How can the panchayat accept the applications made by the 166 persons to grant the house number when they are illegal and have come up in paddy fields,” Niasso wondered, saying the panchayat has not taken any action on the matter.
He said the panchayat has made it very clear to the 166 applicants to produce all the relevant documents in support of their claim for the house numbers.
“The panchayat has to go by the documents such as sale deed, ownership documents et al, which the applicants have failed to produce to date,” he said.
He added: “Our main contention is whether house numbers can be issued to illegal houses constructed in the green paddy zone. Whether the house numbers are being sought to avail schemes or not, the question that is being asked by everyone is whether the panchayat can issue the house numbers to the illegal houses in paddy fields.”

Ruling BJP ST morcha leader Anthony Barbosa on Wednesday condemned what he termed as pressure tactics by former deputy chief minister Manohar Ajgaonkar to force the Davorlim sarpanch Herculano Niasso to issue house numbers to the 166 illegal houses in the village.
Barbosa has warned that any attempt to pressurise and browbeat the Davorlim sarpanch Niasso hailing from the ST community will not be tolerated by the community.
He said he has briefed BJP State president Sadanand Tanavade about how the former deputy CM is exerting pressure on the Davorlim sarpanch to issue the house numbers to the illegal houses. “The BJP ST morcha fully supports the stand taken by the Davorlim sarpanch Niasso not to issue house numbers to the 166 houses at Davorlim. We condemn Ajgaonkar for allegedly trying to pressurise Niasso to issue the house numbers”, Barbosa said, adding that he has briefed top party leaders in detail over the episode.
