Major blaze at Gandhi market destroys house, dry fish shop

A major fire in the wee hours of Wednesday gutted a house and a shop selling dry fish at the Gandhi market, causing a loss of lakhs of rupees.

There were no casualties since the inmates of the house had gone out for a function.

The incident is believed to have occurred at around 4.30 am on Wednesday. Fire officer Gill D’Souza informed that the fire has destroyed the dry fish shop and the goods stacked inside the stall.

He further informed that the fire has caused damage to household items, including a refrigerator, air conditioner, and other items such as rafters and roof tiles. He said no one suffered any injuries since the inmates were out of the house.

House owner Rafik Bepari informed that he received a call around 4.30 am that his house and shop has been engulfed by the fire.

“We had gone out to a relative's house for a function and were due to return on Wednesday. All the household goods have been destroyed in the fire. I was selling chicken as well as dry fish in the shop. All the stock has gone up in flames,” he said, even as he pegged a loss of Rs 4.5 lakh.
