DAY 2: GOANS FEAST WITHOUT BEEF

People return empty handed, situation likely to prevail for next two days, say traders

DAY 2: GOANS FEAST WITHOUT BEEF
MAPUSA
People who went to purchase beef had to return empty handed as most beef stalls were shut in Mapusa on Sunday morning due to the ongoing strike of beef traders in the State.
However, pork stall owners made a killing, as those who missed the red meat preferred to buy pork meat.
A couple of beef stall owners had opened their shops in the morning, but these were devoid of beef as there was no supply of the red meat on the second day.
"We had opened only to clean our stalls. If there is no supply,
how can we sell beef," said Kalamudin Ibrahim Khatib, a beef stall owner.
He went on to point out that many consumers visited the stalls in the morning, but had to return disappointed.
A Mapusa-based beef trader, Goush Bepari informed that the condition would remain the same at least for next two days, even as Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has promised to find a solution on the issue only after he returns back from Delhi on Wednesday.
"We have been facing a lot of harassment at the hands of cow vigilantes who have been arbitrarily blocking beef consignment and at times destroying the meat on flimsy grounds," Bepari said.
He said they have appealed to the CM to let the government import beef and the traders will only carry out sale of the meat.
Even as beef went off the shelf, chicken and fish prices have seen a marginal increase in the Mapusa market. In the absence of beef, pork stall owners made brisk business since early Sunday morning.
It may be recalled that on Friday, All Goa Beef Traders Association had called for a strike on importing beef to Goa complaining of harassment at the hands of "communal elements" who masked themselves as animal rights activists after a consignment of beef bound to Goa was seized by the police on "flimsy grounds".
