Drive-in markets for self-help groups and local artisans along road bypasses can become a reality in villages and towns if panchayats and MLAs send proposals to the government, even as RDA Minister Jayesh Salgaokar on Sunday pointed out that the RDA has set in motion the process to establish the Goa Bazaar in Merces for the benefit of SHGs.
The RDA Minister said that he has proposed a drive-in market at Guirim in Mapusa to accommodate vendors who were displaced during a demolition drive. "In Salcete, no proposal has come to the RDA from any of the panchayats or MLAs. If any such proposal is placed before the department, we can immediately conduct an inspection and take the process further," he said.
He told the media that the Central government has schemes at the state, taluka and village levels.
"At the state level, the government has already set in motion the process to set up the Goa Bazaar at Merces to accommodate SHGs and artisans. This scheme is funded by the centre," he said.
As far as the taluka and village-level schemes are concerned, Jayesh pointed drive-in markets have been mooted along roadsides or road bypasses in the villages. "These markets will not only accommodate vendors, but will provide them basic amenities without any ownership rights over the land. I am implementing the scheme in Guirim-Mapusa. As far as Salcete is concerned, no proposal has so come from any panchayat or MLAs," he said.
