The jinxed issue of finalising a site to locate the campus of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Goa could finally trod towards a solution soon with Chief Minister Pramod Sawant saying on Monday that a decision on the contentious issue will be taken after a joint inspection of a nearly 8-lakh square metres parcel of land identified in Sanguem.
Sawant said that the Sanguem site has been tentatively identified for the IIT campus and the process is underway.
"The process is underway. The concerned officials will inspect the land identified at Sanguem and a decision will be taken after the inspection," Sawant said.
Goa had been allotted the IIT in 2014 and the renowned institution is functioning temporarily from a campus it shares with the Goa Engineering College at Farmagudi.
Several sites identified by the Goa government to locate the IIT campus in the past had to be given up following agitations and opposition from locals.
Way back in 2016-17, the government abandoned plans to locate the institution at Canacona and more recently, the cabinet decision to allot the IIT land at Shel-Melaulim was withdrawn after a violent and sustained agitation by locals there.
