The existing patient ratio does not favour the health care workers, including doctors, paramedics and multi-tasking staff (MTS) at the Margao-based Covid hospitals -- the South Goa district hospital and ESI hospital.
Doctors in the know, however, say the reduction in the admissions, though by a small percentage, has given the health care workers the much needed breathing space and to devote more attention on the patients undergoing treatment at these hospitals.
Consider this. Earlier this month, the South Goa district hospital treated around 535 patients as against the official bed strength of 505. On Thursday around 62 beds were available in the hospital, indicating that around 443 patients were undergoing treatment inside. Add around 30 patients, who were accommodated on the mattresses for want of beds at the height of the second wave, and the figure indicates that there’s reduction of around 90 patients in the district hospital compared to last fortnight.
A senior district hospital official pointed out that the reduction in the patients has not altered the doctor-patient ratio, but has only given heath care workers the breathing space they badly needed. “With the admissions coming down marginally, the health care workers can devote more attention to the patients admitted in the hospital”, the doctor added.
