CANACONA
Two spinster siblings in their seventies are reported to have ended their lives in their house at Mokhard-Bhatpal in Shristhal-Canacona late Sunday evening.
According to sources, the highly decomposed bodies of Rekha Kamat (73) and her sister Medha (70) were found in two separate rooms at the house. A handwritten note along with cash of Rs 15,000 was found at the scene, mentioning that the money should be used to conduct their last rites.
Source said the two sisters who were living together had been under considerable mental stress and had isolated themselves from the neighbourhood.
When some stench began to emanate from their house, panch Ramu (Dhillan) Naik and some neighbours went towards the house. Suspecting something fishy on account of the foul smell, they notified the Canacona police and intimated the relatives of the deceased.
A police team went to the house and found that while the door was closed, it was not locked from the inside. The police entered the house and found the two highly decomposed bodies, one lying in the bedroom and the other in the kitchen. Police also found a handwritten note along with cash of Rs 15,000 at the scene, as well as a bottle of spirit. During the initial scene investigation, police confirmed that nothing inside the house appeared disturbed, suggesting no immediate signs of forced entry or ransacking of the premises. Stating that the two sisters were last visited by their elder brother in the first week of September, police said local enquires also indicated that they had recently expressed about having no interest in living any more. After conducting the panchanama, police sent the two bodies to the South Goa District Hospital at Margao for required medico-legal procedures and post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death.
Canacona police have initiated a detailed investigation following the information received from the informant that his two aunts were found dead in their house.
Samples of visceral organs have been preserved for chemical analysis and both bodies were later handed over to family members for final rites. PSI Ramdas Doifode of Canacona Police Station is conducting further investigations in the matter.
