Director General of Police Muktesh Chander has sent out a new dictum to his traffic cops - to focus on serious traffic offences. Speaking to reporters, Chander who also announced yet another drive, this time to teach commuters to respect a zebra crossing said that the number of serious offences booked would be used as a mark of quality of an officer. “I want my officers to focus on quality (serious) offences including drunk driving, over speeding, using mobile phone while driving, riding triple seat, tinted glasses, dangerous driving, driving without a number plate, modified bikes, overtaking on a bridge and underage driving,” Chander told reporters adding that postings of the police officers will be decided
based on the number of challans the concerned officer have issued in the quality prosecution category. The police department is planning on purchasing at least five car camcorders. “We will have five initially. These will be placed in the cars of police inspectors in five major cities in the State which will help put the violations on record,” he added. The DGP also announced a 15-day Statewide drive, Right of Pedestrian on Zebra Crossing scheduled from June 16. “If there is a pedestrian waiting to cross the road at a zebra crossing and the vehicle driver does not stop the vehicle to let the pedestrian cross, then the driver will be fined,” he said adding that first the roads will have to be painted to mark out the zebra crossing. “Proper signage will be put on parking slots so that zebra parking is kept free and vehicles are not parked on the zebra crossing. Wherever traffic staff is available they will ensure that no one parks any vehicle on zebra crossing,” he added. Banners, placards, posters will also be prepared and displayed at appropriate places, he said. Among other issues raised were the absence of zebra crossings at junctions, stop signs before the zebra crossing, etc.
