The duplication was unearthed after CCP Commissioner Dipak Desai initiated a drive against illegal handcarts along the 18th June Road. The entire process kicked off after Mayor Surendra Furtado who directed the Commissioner to initiate action against the illegal hand carts stating that they were causing problem to the pedestrians and traffic.
During the drive, it was discovered that there were more than one cart with the same numbers operating at different locations.
Following this discovery, CCP Market Committee headed by Ward No 18 Councillor Uday Madkaikar had asked all the hand cart operators to come to the CCP on Wednesday with their documents in original.
While only 72 hand carts have been issued licences by the CCP, nearly 90 of them came in with their documents, claiming that they were original.
“When we initiated the process to remove illegal carts, we realised that there is duplication in numbers. So we had called all the cart owners with their legal papers to check the duplication. In some cases, we had two hand cart operators bearing the same licence number and both had come with their documents”, said Madkaikar.
“CCP officials know who the original 72 licence holders are. The market inspectors are supposed to keep a tab on those illegally operating their businesses. CCP has all the records with even their photographs. So strict action has to be initiated against the carts which are over and above these 72 handcarts,” said a CCP official.
Speaking to The Goan, Madkaikar blamed the market inspectors for their failure to keep tabs on the hand carts operating illegally across the City.
Stating that CCP already has a detailed list of the licences issued to the 72 hand carts legally operating, he said, “We had called all the owners with original documents. We will carry out physical verification of all the hand carts on Saturday. A detailed report will be put before the CCP meeting.”
“These are movable carts, but we had received complaints that they were stationed in one place. We will carry out scrutiny of the carts and check if they have wheels for movement,” he said.
