MARGAO: Goa Forward Party-backed Margao city fathers received brand new e-cycles to move around in their wards with a two-fold objective - to help promote green energy and green cities as part of Global Mobility summit which has laid stress on congestion-free mobility.
The e-cycles will also ensure that the councillors are seen around attending to the work in their respective wards. With just two years to go for the municipal election, GFP supremo Vijai Sardesai has sent out a veiled warning that the party will disown the councillors if they fail to live up to the expectations of the voters.
Each of the e-cycles handed over to the 12 councillors, including Margao Municipal Chairperson Babita Prabhudesai, Vice-chairperson Tito Cardozo has cost the GFP supremo a whopping Rs 45,000.
After MARG convenor Gurunath Kelekar flagged off the e-cycles, Sardesai told the media that GFP wanted its councilors to be forward in their work. "They should be seen in their wards and be on the move. If they are not seen in their wards, they cannot stand for elections again. Let’s be clear, the councillors have a clear brief to ensure the gutters are clean, garbage and wild bushes are cleared before Ganesh Chaturthi. This is their job and to help them is the job of the party. If they cannot do, people will not choose them again,” Sardesai said.
Secondly, the TCP Minister said e-cycles are an answer to many a problem faced in the world today. “E-cycles represent green energy and green energy means green cities. Congestion-free mobility is what has been emphasised at the ongoing Global Mobility summit underway in New Delhi. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has laid stress on e-transport and congestion-free mobility," he added.
The TCP Minster said what the GFP has done by launching the e-cycles is a small gesture on part of the regional party to supplement the work carried out by the Global Mobility summit.
He said the party has introduced the e-cycle as it going to be the thing of the future in tune with the environmental needs of the times. “Beyond this, I want our party-backed councillors to be always on the move in their respective wards and serve the people," he added.
