When contacted, Sanguem PI Nilesh Rane said three boys would usually go swimming in the river. On Sunday evening, Pradip Patil along with his companions went to swim when it was low tide, but the water level rose in the evening due to high tide and Pradip began to struggle in the water.
The other two other boys, who were accompanying Pradip, raised an alarm. Locals who gathered at the site informed the police, PI Rane added.
PSI Sachin Panhalkar along with his staff rushed to the spot and fished out the boy from the water. He was rushed to the Primary Health Centre, Sanguem, where the medical officer declared him dead on arrival.
Police further said a case of unnatural death was registered based on the note of the medical officer, PHC Sanguem.
PSI Panhalkar conducted the inquest and the body was sent for post-mortem at ID Hospital in Ponda. The body was later handed over to relatives for last rites.
