The commercial capital observed total Janata Curfew on Sunday in response to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call, with the markets, bus stands and all modes of communication coming to a halt throughout the day.
Two eateries, including a restaurant and a café, which were found open were ordered shut by the Margao police. A couple of pharmacies remained open in the city.
The bustling wholesale and the retail fish markets, the New Market and the Gandhi Market all observed a total lock-down on Sunday. The Margao KTC bus stand wore a deserted look with buses parked inside the depot, while private bus operators kept their vehicles off the road on Sunday.
Motorcycles and rickshaws all stayed off the road.
The city roads and the thoroughfares were all deserted as citizens voluntarily observed the curfew by staying indoors. Only an odd two-wheeler or a four-wheeler could be spotted on the roads, leaving the crowded streets deserted. The SGPDA fish market observed the curfew and its gates were found locked. The wholesale fish market also wore a deserted look with the outstation fish transporting vehicles all lined along the wholesale fish market road.
The Pimpalkatta area of the city “ the nerve centre of the commercial capital -- which plays host to the New Market and the adjoining Gandhi Market, wore a deserted look. The congested roads leading to the markets were all empty throughout Sunday.
The Gandhi Market, which usually does roaring business on Sunday, with migrants thronging the place for the weekly purchases, was shut down completely. Neither the vegetable market nor the grocery shops were opened on Sunday. The meat stalls were also shut down.
The Goa police made their presence felt on the ground throughout the day in Margao and Fatorda. officials manning the Margao and Fatorda police stations were on the field taking stock of the situation.
At the Housing Board, Gogol, Fatorda PI Kapil Nayak was advising the people assembled in public places to stay indoors.
