Farmer activist moves SPCA in six-month old assault case

PANAJI

Farmer activist Hanumant Parab has lodged a complaint with the State Police Complaints Authority (SPCA) alleging brutality by Deputy Superintendent of Police Sagar Ekoskar and Police Inspector Prajyot Phadte during a peaceful protest in Pissurlem in March.

Parab has sought dismissal of their services from the police department for resorting to ‘unprovoked assault and violence' at the protest held against the transportation of iron ore.

The Goa bench of Bombay High Court had last month declined to entertain a joint petition filed by Parab and Floyd Countinho pertaining to the matter but proposed to take the matter before the SPCA, if desired.

In his complaint before the SPCA on Monday, Parab accused the government as well as Goa Police of failing to take action on his complaints despite evidence indicating the two officers committed human rights violations. The 9-page complaint copy also narrates the sequence of events leading to the assault by the police team at Pissurlem on March 11, 2022. The complainant has prayed for strict departmental action against the errant officers and their termination from service.

In separate allegations before the High Court, Parab had charged Ekoskar with manhandling and harassing him when he was protesting against the alleged the rampant transportation of ore from the village whereas Coutinho alleged that the senior officer, as in-charge of Maina Curtorim police station had demanded a bribe of Rs 10-lakh failing which he threatened Coutinho to implicate him in a false case.
