MARGAO
A primary member of the BJP Fatorda unit, Laurel Abranches, has quit the party in protest against the police action against the people seeking justice for Bismarque Dias at Panaji last week.
In his resignation letter addressed to the party president Vinay Tendulkar, Abranches said it was
very shocking to see Goa police working under the influence of the Goa BJP government.
“The police were harsh and arrogant in their behaviour as they invoked Section 144 of the CrPC
against innocent people, including senior citizens, elderly women, ladies, who had gathered
opposite the Mandovi ferry wharf to seek justice for Bismarque,” Abranches said. He also said that "the police stormed in and physically pulled and pushed harmless Goans like stray animals and packed them in parked vehicles before driving them to various police stations in North Goa."
“These were the same Goans who had given a strong mandate to the BJP government to come to
power in Goa in 2012. Was the police not arrogant in dealing with the unarmed people? Did they
deserve the action for protesting peacefully to achieve justice?” Laurel questioned, while stating in this letter that he has decided to quit after witnessing the police acting in a high-handed and arrogant manner.
