A shack and cloth stall was reduced to ashes and property worth Rs 24 lakh was destroyed on Anjuna beach early Tuesday morning.
Mapusa fire officials informed that a shack, ‘Sharmila Restaurant’ belonging to Pramila Matkar and a cloth stall owned by Prakash Ratwad situated on the Ozrant beach in Anjuna were gutted in the fire.
According to the fire personnel, the fire which started at around 3 am from the rear side of the shack spread fast and engulfed the shack and the cloth stall situated adjacent to it.
Five of the staff who was sleeping in the shack woke up and tried to put off the fire but failed in their attempt.
The presence of the fire brigade was fruitless as it could not enter the beach.
Locals along with the fire personnel brought water in buckets and managed to put out the fire early in the morning.
With five fridges, furniture, sound system all gutted in the fire, the shack owner suffered a loss of around Rs 20 lakh while the cloth stall owner suffered a loss of Rs 4 lakh. The cause of fire was yet to be ascertained and further investigation is in progress.
