Fire hydrant failure exposes BJP’s 7-year neglect of Mapusa: Cong

All five hydrants in municipal market found non-functional

Congress leader Rahul Mhambre has slammed the BJP-led administration in Mapusa after it emerged that all five fire hydrants installed in the municipal market are non-functional, warning that the town is dangerously ill-prepared to deal with a fire emergency.

Mhambre said the revelation exposed years of civic neglect, administrative apathy and misplaced priorities under the BJP MLA, who has represented Mapusa for the last seven years.

Referring to the recent devastating fire at Vasco, Mhambre said he had earlier warned that the incident should serve as a wake-up call for Mapusa, particularly given the congested market lanes occupied by vendors, which could prevent fire tenders from reaching affected areas during an emergency.

He had also questioned when the hydrants were last inspected and whether fire safety drills had been conducted, urging the municipal administration to take preventive measures.

“Unfortunately, our concerns have now been vindicated. Not one but all five fire hydrants are non-functional. What exactly is the administration waiting for? Must we wait for another tragedy before basic safety measures are put in place?” he questioned.

Mhambre said the fire safety lapse was symptomatic of the broader deterioration of civic infrastructure in Mapusa. He cited problems including dysfunctional sewage infrastructure, overflowing drains, pothole-ridden roads, damaged and encroached footpaths, poor sanitation and garbage accumulation in the municipal market.

He also flagged inadequate public conveniences, poor drainage, unorganised parking, encroachments and the lack of proper pedestrian facilities, saying residents, traders and visitors continued to suffer due to the administration's failure to address basic civic needs.

“Mapusa does not need more announcements, foundation stones and publicity exercises. It needs a functioning administration that delivers results on the ground. Seven years is more than enough time to demonstrate commitment to the town,” Mhambre said.
