At least 500 trees were uprooted and 150 electricity poles were damaged in different parts of Bardez, as Cyclone Tauktae caused extensive damage in the taluka.
According to reports, the fire stations at Mapusa and Pilerne received about 500 calls pertaining to fallen trees and 150 damaged electricity polls.
The firefighters managed to clear around 150 trees from Saturday night till Monday evening and officials have said work will continue for at least 2-3 days.
The electricity department said the damage to electrical equipment is estimated at about Rs 1-1.5 crore.
Early Sunday morning, two feeders from the Mapusa electricity substation got damaged and repair work was in progress till Monday evening.
Given the extensive damage all over the taluka, staff from the fire stations and electricity department in Bardez were unable to attend to all affected areas. As a result, police teams from all five police stations in Mapusa, Porvorim, Saligao, Calangute and Anjuna also assisted in work to clear the fallen trees from the road.
The panchayat members and panchayat secretaries of several panchayats and the Mapusa Municipal Council Chief Officer Clen Madeira also offered assistance in the restoration work.
