Coast Guard DIG Goa Region Himanshu Nautiyal on Tuesday said the Coast Guard would keep a watch on the movement of fishermen in boats without safety gear
and notify the fisheries department to take action against them.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a function organised by the Coast Guard, DIG Nautiyal said he would also insist on valid identity cards for fishermen.
“Valid identity proof can be in the form of biometric cards or Aadhaar cards,” he said.
“We will also look into the safety of fishermen as they are the eyes and ears of the Coast Guard and armed forces,” he added.
DIG Nautiyal informed that the Coast Guard was setting up an infrastructure development project on 39 acres of land at Chicolna.
“The building work is in progress. It will house office space and mess for officers and sailors. It is likely to be commissioned within the next five months,” Nautiyal said.
He described the Coast Guard as a central coordinating authority for any search and rescue operation.
“There has never been a time when the Coast Guard had failed to do its duty or express incapability in conducting any search or rescue operation in the State.”
“We are keeping a watch on ships for any discharge of waste in the sea. If any ship is found indulging in any such activity, then action would be taken,” he said.
Replying to a question on being a trustee in MPT and his view on pollution, DIG Nautiyal said he was against any type of pollution on land, sea or air.
“Having taken over as the new DIG of Goa Region, I will emphasise on coastal security which is of paramount importance,” he said.
