Flood precautions take centre stage at Poinguinim

The four-lane road works dominated the Poinguinim gram sabha, with members demanding local body's immediate intervention.
Voicing their concern on alleged unplanned works, where natural drains and existing culverts are blocked due to incessant dumping of mud to make the four-lane road, the locals have asked the local body not to take things lying down, but hasten up contacts with concerned people to do whatever possible to avoid flooding before the monsoon strikes.
Sarpanch Vallabh Tengse, who chaired his first gram sabha after occupying the chair, assured the members that a meeting with PWD engineers and contractors will be convened at the earliest opportunity and measures will be taken to avoid flooding.
“It's very unfortunate that work of such magnitude is undertaken in such reckless manner, risking the lives of local residents. It is imperative that corrective measures are put in place soon, to build confidence of the residents,” Tengse stated.
The members also raised questions on garbage collection and the secretary stated that garbage bins are already placed in most locations in all the wards and workers engaged for the job will begin collection soon.
Members also sought to raise MOPA airport issue, however the sarpanch requested to keep the issue for next gram sabha stating the application seeking opposition to MOPA airport was received only a day before the meet and as the issue is a major one, it should be discussed at the next meeting, the members agreed to the sarpancha's suggestion.
Former sarpanch Mahesh Naik proposed the vote of thanks. BDO observer Priyanka Naik Gaonkar, sarpanch and deputy sarpanch and seven panchas out of nine were present.
