CANACONA

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant laid the foundation stone for the construction of a new school block of Shri Mallikarjun Vidhyalaya at Char-Rasta in Canacona on Saturday.

The chief minister was accorded a warm welcome at the entrance of Centro Promotor de Instrucao (CPI), Char-rasta, on his first visit to the taluka after he took charge as chief minister chair for the second time.

Others present on the occasion included Speaker Ramesh Tawadkar, CPI President Shamba Dessai, Canacona Municipal Council Chairperson Simon Rebello and most of the ruling Councillors.

The CPI, which runs a primary school, high school and a higher secondary school (science) is constructing a new block to accommodate three classrooms at a cost of about Rs 60 lakh, as part of its expansion plan.

The chief minister also agreed to examine a proposal to start vocational streams, after the management placed a request to seek government nod to begin the vocational stream in its HSS section.

Sawant said his trip to Canacona taluka was purely a private visit.

“Speaker Ramesh Tawadkar had scheduled some non-official programmes, which included laying of the foundation stone for the construction of a new school block, construction of two houses under the BJP's Seva Saptah and to meet BJP karyakartas,” said Sawant. He later signed the visitor’s book of CPI.

CPI General Assembly Chairman Rajendra Dessai told reporters that efforts are being made to construct and commission the new School block on time, since the CPI is in its 99th year and will enter its centennial year on October 2.

“We got the support from government and from our benefactors to expand our century-old institute by adding more classrooms,” said Dessai.
