Freedom fighter Madhav Shivram Korde allegedly ended his life by shooting himself at his residence in Kollame-Curti on Saturday afternoon.

According to reports, the 84-year-old Korde shot himself with his decades-old gun at around 2.30 pm while his family members were preparing lunch. Relatives said Korde had been unwell for several months and may have taken the drastic step to end his life.

DySP Sunita Sawant and Police Inspector Sudesh Naik visited the site, as the panchanama was conducted by the police team.

Born on October 29, 1931 at his mother’s maternal residence (Vaidya family) at Keri-Ponda, Korde, a popular figure in Curti and fondly known as ‘Tato’ lived his entire life in Kollame-Curti.

He had done his schooling in Sharda High School and Almeida School at Ponda and had learnt Portuguese through the Portuguese Primary at Ponda.

He was the former chairman of Ameya Vidya Prasarak Mandal and Dada Vaidya High School.

Incidentally, Korde’s book 'Vrat- Gomant Swatantra Ladheache’ was released recently on the occasion of Revolution Day.

The body was sent for a post mortem later in the evening and relatives informed that the final rites will take place on Sunday afternoon at Curti.

People from different walks of life have condoled the death of Korde.

South Goa MP Narendra Sawaikar, who visited the residence, said that Korde was a stalwart of the Goa revolution movement. “It is sad that he had to end his life because of sickness,” Sawaikar said.

PWD Minister Sudin Dhavalikar said that Korde's entire family was involved in the freedom movement and had fought to liberate Goa.

“I was very sad to hear this news. He was a great personality. I released his book recently in his absence, as he was not well at that time. His work in the freedom movement will be always remembered,” Dhavalikar said.

Ponda MLA Lavu Mamledar also expressed grief at the death of Korde. “His freedom struggle will always be remembered, though he has passed away,” Mamledar said.
