Freshly re-laid Smart City road caves in

PANAJI

A stretch of one of the many Panaji city roads, which were hurriedly re-carpeted ahead of the monsoon setting in after they were left in a mess by contractors of 'Smart City' works, caved in at a spot adjoining the General Benard Guedes garden near Geeta Bakery.

The part of the road which sunk is at the eastern tail end of the General Benard Guedes Road near the ancestral home of the Dempo family in the heart of the city and is usually busy at peak hours.

Apart from having developed cracks, the road is also sinking at one spot along this stretch and poses a danger to vehicle users and commuters.

A fresh 'hot-mix' carpet was laid on this road only in the last week of May and the authorities had also done some patching work in this very area when a gaping pot-hole emerged soon after the hot-mixing work.

Similar instances of the freshly re-carpeted roads cracking and sinking have also occurred in two or three other locations in the city.
