VALPOI/PANAJI
Congress candidates Girish Chodankar and Roy Naik on Friday filed their nomination forms to the Panaji and Valpoi by-polls respectively.
Naik submitted his nomination form to the Returning Officer Praveen Parab. He was accompanied by GPCC President Shantaram Naik, Goa in-charge A Chellakumar, Opposition Leader Chandrakant (Babu) Kavalekar, Ponda MLA Ravi Naik, Mahila Congress president Adv Pratima Coutinho, Valpoi Block Congress president Ashish Kanekar, Mahila Block president Roshan Desai, Seva
Dal Mahila president Savitri Kavalekar, party senior workers Swati Kerkar and others.
Speaking to reporters, AICC general secretary and Goa in-charge A Chellakumar said: "Now, the situation has totally changed and is against Vishwajeet Rane in Valpoi constituency as he lost the confidence of the people after he resigned as legislator."
"Rane has taken the voters for granted for last couple of years. Even then the voters were supporting him only because of Congress, but he has cheated the voters by resigning without consulting them," he said.
"Congress candidate, Roy Naik will definitely win with a sufficient margin of votes," said Chellakumar.
When questioned about the presence of Pratapsing Rane, Chellakumar said the Congress party always thought that politics and family matter are totally different. "Nobody's family should not be disturbed because of politics, so we have not forced him to attend the filing of nomination when his son is contesting on BJP ticket."
GPCC president Naik criticised the government for playing foul politics by building pressure on prospective candidates of the Congress.
Meanwhile, Goa Pradesh Congress Committee president Shantaram Naik on Friday lashed out at Chief Minister Mnaohar Parrikar over his admission that Rs 35,000 crore figure mentioned in the Shah Commission report is not correct.
"This is a government of lies. It has been proved in the Assembly with Parrikar's admission that his oft repeated allegation that Congress looted Rs 35,000 through the mining scam was wrong. Shah Commission, he has admitted. Many such lies will be exposed during our campaign."
Congress candidate for Panaji bypoll Girish Chodankar, who filed his nomination on Friday, alleged that ‘Parrikar is not a person anymore but a dishonest attitude'.
"Parrikar has let people down. BJP has imposed its government on the people who elected Congress as the single largest party. Parrikar should give the people of Panaji one reason why they should elect him again. Even after 25 years, he still wants 365 days more to improve the deteriorating state of Panaji," Chodankar stated.
He argued that his candidate is aimed at venting out the anger and grievances of Panaji. "I know my own weaknesses and strengths. If my weakness is that I come from Margao, my strength is that I never hoodwink my voters. When the CM is defeated on August 23, the second CM will crash out in six months," the All India Congress Committee secretary Chodankar said.
