Governor Dr Mridula Sinha expressed confidence that Goa can emerge as the first State to have successfully accomplished the goal of 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan' in the entire country in this year itself.
Dr Sinha, who is also the brand ambassador of the 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan' declared by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, said Margao can lead Goa in becoming the first city to have been declared as having successfully achieved the goal of this mission in the entire State.
Addressing a gathering after inaugurating the 'Clean Margao' Mission under the wider umbrella of 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan' in Margao on Friday, Dr Sinha called on people to look at Swachh Bharat Abhiyan as leading to habit formation. She said Goa can be the first State in this regard if all residents of the State decide likewise.
Claiming that Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is not merely an 'Abhiyan' but a 'Tyohar' / 'Parv' (festival), the Governor said cleanliness leads to development, which is also a festival. She also emphasised on the importance of maintaining a clean body, mind and intellect.
Dr Sinha also called on headmasters in schools to prevail upon the children to pay attention to two houses in their neighbourhood for maintaining cleanliness, while stating that children need to be made “investors” in this Abhiyan.
Referring to tourists, Dr Sinha said, “Hospitality is your right but cleanliness is your duty.” She said Swachh Bharat Abhiyan needs to be treated as a 'Jan Abhiyan' (a movement of the masses) as the latter have to get connected with it.
Earlier, Margao MLA Digambar Kamat felt Margao should be the first in Swachh Bharat Mission. “We have to keep our surroundings clean to usher in a clean Margao,” he remarked.
MMC Chairperson Dr Babita Angle Prabhudesai said to achieve a litter-free Goa, co-operation is a must and the onus is on the people.
Later, the Governor also symbolically embarked on a Swachh Bharat Abhiyan along with Kamat, near Power House, Aquem.
Those present on the occasion included SE (Electricity Dept), Laxmikant Kolvekar and MMC Chief Officer Siddhivinayak Naik.
