Streetlights to sport LEDs
PANAJI: All of Goa’s inefficient and sometimes creaky streetlights will be replaced by efficient LED bulbs that are expected to save around ₹18.90 crore of the State government in energy charges each year. The decision was taken by the State Cabinet which met on Friday to adopt the central government’s Street Light National Programme by replacing the ‘highly inefficient’ existing fixtures with 50% energy saving LEDs. The Goa government has approved a scheme for expatriates to voluntarily donate or contribute towards the development of the State, offering tax exemptions to those who do, Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar announced.
Addressing media persons immediately after a Cabinet meeting, where the decision was taken, Parsekar said that the donors could have their names etched in the projects like that of schools, community infrastructure such as community halls, de-addiction centres and the like.
“The scheme will be called ‘Mhozo ganv, Mhojem Goy’. All proposals received will be scrutinized by a high-level committee headed by the Commissioner of NRI Affairs for necessary approval and clearances and then forwarded to the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation which will be the nodal agency, under the project,” Parsekar told media persons.
Parsekar said that the NRI Cell and the donor would sign an MoU before undertaking any project in which the terms and conditions of each project would be clearly stipulated.
Parsekar said while the project undertaken could have the name of the donors, the ownership of the project would remain with the government.
Parsekar was eager to stress that the scheme was entirely voluntary as well as those who contribute to the scheme would get income tax benefits under the scheme.
The government expects that donors would contribute right from small donations towards things like school benches and other teaching equipment to whole community halls vocational centres and the like.
