PANAJI:

Goa is witnessing one of its third wettest monsoon in last six decades, as the State crosses 150 inches (3811.8mm) of rainfall for the season with 34 more days to go for the four-month long season to end. If the active monsoon intensity continues, the State may surpass its 2020 record of receiving highest-ever rainfall of 162 inches.

With 45.8 per cent of surplus rains as on August 27, the State has broken its average normal trend. As per Indian Meteorological department (IMD), as on date, the average rainfall is 102.9 inches (2613.9 mm).

At current speed, the year 2024, may soon overpower the 2019 record of 155 inches rains- which is seen as the third highest rainfall activity after 1961 and 2020.

The data shows, the year 2020 with 162.2 inches of rainfall, broke a six decade old record- the year 1961 that had recorded 160 inches of rains.

As per IMD sources, various factors have been attributed to the increasing rainfall activities including low pressure belt formation in the Arabian Sea, low pressure area in Bay of Bengal, cyclonic circulation, offshore trough, etc.

“The monsoon currents have been very active over the State throughout the season so far,” sources said. As per the data, North Goa recorded 45 per cent surplus while 44 per cent excess rains are received in South district.

July 8, with 236mm of rainfall has been the wettest day of the season, while July 15 with 163 mm of rainfall was the second wettest.

Valpoi has recorded the highest 189.8 inches (4823.1mm) of rainfall for the season as on date, followed by Sanguem 181.2 inches (4604.4mm), Sanquelim 162.7 inches (4134.8mm), Quepem 160.5 inches (4078.4mm) and Pernem 153.2 inches (3892.1mm).
