Govt op theatres at three PHCs to go private

The State government is actively considering a proposal to turn over fully-equipped operation theatres in three primary health centers to the private sector, according tornHealth Minister and Deputy Chief Minister Francis D’Souza. Health centers at Valpoi,rnSanquelim and Bicholim were identified as having operating theatres with all the equipment to carry out an operation but were being left un-used due to the lack of personnel.

“Valpoi, Sanquelim and Bicholim have operation theatres but are not being used. So we are planning to keep these open for private hospitals. These are new operation theatres at PHCs but no surgeons, anesthesiologists and radiologists there. If private hospitals can make use of these facilities, it will go well,” said D’Souza.
Undertaken by GSIDC, each of the PHCs has two operation theatres that according
to D’Souza have all the equipment for an operation to be undertaken. He added that the
decision would go a long way in allowing private hospitals that didn’t have the infrastructure to conduct operations. Though still at the planning stage, finer details on how it would work and if a patient would have to pay a fee, have yet to be finalized. D’Souza however added that it would help in opening up the areas, which are far from the city, to be used as viable health centers. He also added that for the moment, the government had narrowed only three PHCs to this arrangement. “We are still
looking at other hospitals and will see if more can be added to this list,” he said.
