Govt silent spectator to beef activism: Reginaldo

Charges beef raids orchestrated by ‘BJP-sponsored’ activists and organisations

MARGAO
The Congress on Monday demanded that the Goa government should immediately take up the responsibility of supplying beef to Goans, even as he accused the coalition government of being a silent spectator to the dadagiri of self-styled activists who stopped beef-carrying vehicles and destroyed the consignments.
Flanked by Congress Secretary Avinash Tavares, Congress MLA Reginaldo Lourenco demanded to know what stops the government from making available beef to Goans. "The government seems to be watching the situation as a mere spectator, while activists are having a free run destroying beef consignments right under the nose of the authorities."
The government has not taken any initiative to import the meat legally till date," he charged.
He condemned the actions and said the same were orchestrated by BJP-sponsored activists who are disrupting beefa imports from Karnataka. "They are making false allegations that beef is illegal and certificates are fake, filing false complaints and even allegedly thrown phenyl on the beef stock," he said.
Accusing the state administration of remaining silent inspite of the traders having the requisite papers, Reginaldo asked, "How can the police act against these traders, who have the paper work, simply based on suspicion unless they have proof that the certificates are fake?"
"This appears to be BJP-sponsored activism in the light of the failed attempt to polarize people over Mhadei issue and the backlash faced by the government over coal and river nationalization," he said and questioned, "Why else is Parrikar silent on the issue?"
Saying that Goa Meat Complex has been sabotaged by the BJP government and now that cut beef imported from Karnataka is being disrupted, the Congress MLA said the elements are doing more harm than good by disrupting beef supplies. "Leave aside the loss of business and jobs to hundred of Goans, the shortage of beef will raise the prices of chicken, eggs, fish and even vegetables," he said.
"It is said that in the name of cow, beef in Goa which is derived from buffalo, ox, bull is paying a heavy price. It is frightening to state that Goa, the role model state of India, has come under the dictatorship of right-wing elements," he said, adding that peaceful Goa had never heard of violence against people involved in the beef trade during the Congress government.

Goan pork sausages are stuffed in small intestines of beef cattle. Sausage producers now fear that the ongoing ban on slaughter of beef cattle may adversely affect the easy availability of the intestines used to stuff the pickled pork. As of now, sausage producers have begun to feel the heat as the…
