Ahead of the Aqua Goa Mega Fish Festival 2023-24 scheduled next month, the State government planned a flag-off ceremony on Tuesday with an aim to promote and boost the fishing culture. The Department of Fisheries is the organising agency for the seventh edition of the festival slated from February 2 to 4, 2024 at the Open Field Ground of the Sports Authority of Goa, Campal.
“The Festival showcases Goa’s rich, varied and amazing variety of fishes in different kinds of habitats that involve Marine, Seawater and Freshwater through its Aquarium Gallery open to the general public. The festival also serves as a platform for one of its kind to promote and boost the fishing culture in Goa, especially among the youth through seminars, workshops and B2B interactions,” reads a press statement issued by the government.
The release further mentions that the festival will also be showcasing the rich Goan culture through a variety of entertainment programmes including Goan folk dances and food court serving authentic Goan delicacies to engage the general audience.
“In view of this, a flag-off ceremony for the event is scheduled on Tuesday at 10:30 am at Secretariat...” it said.
This event will be followed by the Tourism Department’s ‘annual seafood festival’ on Miramar beach from February 9 to 11. This festival has come into controversy as it will be held on the beach instead of Campal ground and despite assurance to the High Court of Bombay at Goa in the year 2000 to stop holding food festivals on the beach. Environmental activists have meanwhile approached the City Corporation seeking to shift the venue.
