Govt urged to postpone school classes due to extreme heat

NSUI cites dehydration risks for students

PANAJI

As Goa faces extreme heat with delay in the arrival of monsoon, the students’ wing of the Congress party has urged the government to postpone school classes as the weather could cause quite a discomfort to the students.

The National Students Union of India (NSUI) “ Goa has written to the Education Department has stated that soaring temperatures have created an environment of discomfort and health risks, especially for young students who spend a significant portion of their day in classrooms and school premises.

Naushad Chowdhari, President of the NSUI Goa expressed apprehensions that a rise in temperature and prolonged exposure to heat could lead to dehydration and heat exhaustion among the students.

“Considering the well-being and academic performance of our students, … request the Directorate of Education and Education Minister Pramod Sawant to seriously consider postponing school until the weather conditions improve. This temporary rescheduling would provide much-needed relief to the students and ensure their safety during this challenging time. It would also allow them to resume their studies with renewed energy and focus once the weather becomes more favourable,” reads the letter submitted to the Education Department on Wednesday.

Several parents have been demanding the postponement of classes given that Goa has not even experienced even the pre-monsoon showers and the heat is getting unbearable with every passing day.

The department, on the other hand, has not taken a decision as yet. Sources said that unless an alert on a heat wave is sounded by the India Meteorological Department (Goa), classes will continue as per the scheduled timetable.
