With persistence and increase in depth of westerly winds over south Arabian Sea and increase of cloudiness, conditions are becoming favorable for monsoon onset over Kerala during next 48 hours, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.
The Met department has also said conditions are favourable for further advance of southwest monsoon into some more parts of south Arabian sea and entire Lakshadweep area and Maldives and Comorin area and some parts of northeastern states.
But Cyclone Biparjoy which rapidly intensified into a severe cyclonic storm on Wednesday is expected to impact the monsoon trajectory in the country.
Scientists predict mild onset of monsoon over Kerala and generally it is likely to have a weak progress beyond the southern peninsula due to the influence of the cyclone.
The IMD has warned that some parts of Kerala could witness widespread rain in the upcoming days under the influence of the cyclone.
Meanwhile, the Cyclone Biparjoy (pronounced as ‘Biporjoy’) rapidly intensified into a very severe cyclonic storm over eastcentral and adjoining southeast Arabian Sea.
“The severe cyclonic storm over eastcentral and adjoining southeast Arabian Sea moved nearly north-northeastwards with a speed of 5 kmph, intensified into a very severe cyclonic storm and lay centered about 860 km west-southwest of Goa, 970 km southwest of Mumbai, 1050 km south-southwest of Porbandar and 1350 km south of Karachi,” the IMD bulletin said.
It would move nearly northwards during next 24 hours and then north-northwestwards during subsequent three days.
