Govt wants report on liquidated coop banks

MAPUSA

Expressing concern about liquidation of cooperative banks and societies, Minister for Cooperation Subhash Shirodkar on Saturday directed the department of registrar of co-operative societies to prepare a status report of such liquidated banks/societies in the State.

Shirodkar has also urged the cooperative sector to engage the younger generation so that the youth get exposed to the cooperative movement.

He directed the deputy registrar of co-operative societies to prepare a comprehensive report of the societies that are liquidated within 15 days.

“I have sought a detailed report about the status of these societies which have gone under liquidation so that we can either revive those societies or close them down forever. I will always prefer to revive these societies,” Shirodkar said.

The Minister for Cooperation was addressing a gathering during a function to celebrate the 70th all India co-operative week in Mapusa. Chairperson of Mapusa Municipal Council Priya Mishal, Registrar of Cooperative Societies Manuel Baretto and others were also present.

Shirodkar informed that 35 credit societies went into liquidation in Bardez and Pernem talukas.

“This is a problem which is majorly affecting Bardez,” he said.

He further said that the liquidation of Mapusa Urban Cooperative Bank of Goa Ltd and Madgaum Urban Cooperative Bank will always remain as the black spot in the cooperative sector in the State.

He said there are 1,032 societies in Bardez and Pernem but majority of them were housing societies.

Stating that most of these housing societies have turned into “fighting addas” (battle ground), Shirodkar urged people to work together to resolve issues among them.

He said the chairman and the board members should not only focus on holding meetings but ensure that more members join the society and expand it.

He also urged the influencer in the cooperative sector to infuse young blood in the sector.

“Make the youth involved in the cooperative sector. We need to give exposure to the younger generation so that they can bring new ideas for the success of the movement,” Shirodkar said.

He said, henceforward, every six months the government will evaluate the performance of the cooperative societies.
