In an incident which has shocked the locality, a group of youth allegedly assaulted two individuals and later targetted two policemen near a grocery store at Tanki-Xeldem in Quepem in the wee hours of Thursday.
According to reports, the incident unfolded when two individuals visited a roadside grocery store to purchase ice cream at about 2.30 am. They reportedly requested a group of about seven youths to move aside.
This request angered the group and they are alleged to have assaulted the two individuals, resulting in injuries to both.
On being notified of the incident, a Quepem police team on night patrol comprising ASI Pundalik Gaonkar and PC Driver Rohan Narvekar went to the site at about 3.10 am and began questioning the group.
The group is alleged to have obstructed ASI Pundalik Gaonkar while discharging his lawful duties and later assaulted PC Narvekar, before fleeing from the site.
Quepem police have registered two separate offences against the group in the connection. All accused are currently reported to be at large. Quepem police are investigating the case.
