The ongoing national highway work has upset farmers of Guirim as it has disrupted agriculture activity in the area.

Several farmers complained that the expansion of NH-66 has led to flooding of fields, leaving no scope for them to cultivate them.

“For the last three years, we have been complaining to authorities concerned. In the name of development, they have destroyed our fields,” said Lalitha Naik, a farmer from Guirim.

Another former informed that the road contractor has haphazardly dumped mud in the fields to develop service roads which has blocked all water channels that let the water out into the rivulet.

“We have no problem with the development. But don’t do it at the cost of the locals and environment,” he said.

The President of Guirim communidade, Tulio De Souza said the highway contractor concerned should be questioned for the haphazard work.

“We request the government to direct the contractor to remove the mud dumped in the fields and open the water channels which lead to flooding of the fields,” De Souza said.
