Gusty winds, rain leave trail of destruction in Sattari

VALPOI

An estimated 13 houses and several plantations were damaged while power supply was disrupted at several places as rainstorms struck various parts of Sattari taluka on Wednesday evening.

The Valpoi Fire Services received as many as 38 calls shortly after rains and gusty winds struck the taluka at about 5.30 pm. A number of trees were uprooted and fell on houses and roads, damaging property and blocking traffic at various places.

Of the 38 calls received, the Valpoi Fire Services attended to 13 calls pertaining to damaged houses and the remaining 25 calls pertained to uprooted trees and other damages. “Two vehicles of the Valpoi Fire Services along with one vehicle from the Bicholim Fire Services have been busy at work to clear the blocked roads first in order to restore traffic along the routes, before turning our attention to the damaged houses,” Valpoi Fire Officer Namdev Gawas told The Goan.

“Work will continue into the night to clear all debris and obstacles,” Gawas added.

Many roads along the Valpoi-Morlem and Valpoi-Kumthol routes were blocked due to the uprooted trees. Plantations were also damaged at many villages, including Koparde, Hivre, Chravane, Nagargao and Thane.

Due to strong winds and uprooting of trees, power lines got snapped and power supply was disrupted in Valpoi town and many other villages, including Karanzol, Sawarde, Karmali and Budruk, across the taluka.

The Valpoi electricity department teams were on their toes to rectify the supply.
