The Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) has descended again at Sonsodo to cart away the piled-up mixed garbage inside the Sonsodo waste treatment plant and remediate the same outside.
Post the visit of Waste Management Minister Atanasio Monserrate along with GMWC Managing Director Levinson Martins and local MLAs - Vijai Sardesai, Digambar Kamat and Reginaldo Lourenco - a fleet of trucks have started plying to and fro the waste treatment plant and the Sonsodo legacy dump, with GWMC-appointed contractor carting out tonnes of the waste that has accumulated inside the plant since the last two years.
Incidentally, at the initiative of the GWMC, tonnes of piled up waste was carted out and remediated in mid-2020, during the first Covid wave. However, due to sheer negligence and indifference in treating the daily waste since mid-2020, the waste has again piled up inside the Sonsodo plant. Rough estimates prepared by the GWMC have pegged the total amount of piled up garbage inside the shed at around 14,000 tonnes.
While the Margao Municipality had paid a whopping Rs 84 lakh to the contractor for carting out and remediating the piled up waste inside the Sonsodo plant in 2020, it is now estimated that the entire operation to cart out and remediate the 14,000 tonnes of piled waste may cost the exchequer a whopping Rs 3.23 crore.
GWMC Managing Director Levinson Martins pointed out that the corporation has taken up the responsibility through its contractor to cart away the piled up waste and remediate the same following a meeting the Waste Management Minister had with the local MLAs.
“Waste from the Sonsodo shed is being transported out and remediation is being done at the legacy dump. Work started last Saturday. It will take a minimum of 15 days to complete remediation”, he said.
Martins added: “At present, four multi-deck screen machines are in operation, besides other heavy machinery. Simultaneously work of remediation of the balance of legacy waste is also in progress”.
Sources pointed out that the GWMC is carrying out the work of emptying the Sonsodo plant shed of the piled up waste before the onset of monsoons.
Rough estimate has put the amount of piled up waste lying inside the plant to 14,000 tonnes.

to float EOI to treat daily garbage

With the Margao Municipal Council expressing its inability to handle the daily waste generated in the commercial capital, the Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) is in the process of floating an Expression of Interest (EOI) to treat the daily waste dumped at the Sonsodo plant.
The GWMC has almost finalized the EOI and the same would be soon floated, inviting prospective bidders to take up the work of treating the daily waste dumped at the Sonsodo plant, pegged at around 35 tonnes a day.
The Margao Municipal Council was entrusted with the responsibility of engaging a contractor to treat the daily waste at Sonsodo when the plant shed was rid of the piled up waste. The MMC, however, dilly-dallied on the project, as a result of which no treatment of waste worth its name was carried out at the plant in the last two years.
Sources said the GWMC do not want the situation to return to full cycle again at Sonsodo after the piled up waste is carted out and remediated.
